The Chiku Plant (also known as Sapota or Manilkara zapota) is a popular tropical fruit tree valued for its sweet, grainy-textured fruit and year-round productivity. Native to Central America, it is now widely cultivated across India, especially in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu, due to its adaptability and high yield. The plant grows well in warm, humid climates and prefers well-drained alluvial or loamy soil rich in organic matter. A Chiku plant typically starts bearing fruit within 3 to 5 years of planting. The fruits are round or oval with a brown, rough skin and soft, sweet, caramel-flavored pulp inside. Regular watering, particularly during dry seasons, and periodic pruning help improve flowering and fruit size. The tree is hardy, tolerant to dry conditions, and performs best when exposed to full sunlight. Chiku fruits are rich in vitamins A and C, dietary fiber, and natural sugars, making them a healthy choice for boosting energy and digestion. The plant is low-maintenance and pest-resistant, making it suitable for both home gardens and commercial orchards. With proper care and management, the Chiku plant provides abundant harvests, offering both nutritional and economic benefits to growers.
